Meet Alison Morley

Philosophy

For more than three decades, I have collaborated with photographers to shape documentary and fine art photography books and projects. My work extends beyond traditional photo editing to include narrative development, sequencing, visual research, mentorship, and editorial collaboration.

I see the editor as a creative partner—someone who brings a fresh perspective, asks questions, and helps a photographer see the work with greater clarity and distance. Every project is different, and my role is to listen closely, recognize what may be emerging, and help the photographer find the most compelling way to bring it forward.

About

Alison Morley is the Chair Emerita of the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism Program at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, where she led a wide range of international students and faculty for 18 years. She began her career as a portrait photographer in Los Angeles and, after ten years working with various magazines, became Director of Photography at The Los Angeles Times Magazine.

She later moved to New York City and worked as Director of Photography at The New York Times Sophisticated Traveler, Audubon, Civilization, Esquire, Mirabella, Smart Money (consultant), OPRAH (consultant) and ELLE magazines.

Alison currently works globally as a book consultant, photo editor, photobook editor, sequencer, curator and educator. Her forte is Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism, though she has worked in every genre of photography.
